MINT Oceania is a Chapter of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers Inc (MINT), embracing Aotearoa-New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific. Our purpose is to create a hub for MI in the Oceania region, to represent an evidence-based and up-to-date face of MI in our region.
Specifically, we aim to:
We offer professionals interested in MI a place to connect and support each other in the practice, research and training of MI. We have two types of membership:
1. Full members are all members of the international MINT Inc, who have also selected to belong to our chapter
2. Friends of MINT Oceania are people keen to learn about MI and deepen their skills, without necessarily being ready or interested in joining MINT.
We are a not-for-profit association, registered with the Incorporated Societies Register of New Zealand.
Our members are all volunteers and do not gain any income from MINT Oceania activities. Our region can feel both vast and remote, so we don’t just rely on in-person events for connection. We also try to help connect local communities with like-minded international colleagues to share learning globally.
We love MI but we don’t expect you to. But if you like MI, have questions, or want to connect with other people who are interested in MI, we hope MINT Oceania will be a helpful resource for you.
The Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) is an international not-for-profit organization of trainers in Motivational Interviewing. Members come from diverse backgrounds and apply MI in a variety of settings. Their central interest is to improve the quality and effectiveness of conversations about behaviour change. Started in 1997, MINT has grown to include representatives of 40 countries and speakers of more than 30 different languages.
The mission of MINT is to promote good practice in the use, research and training of motivational interviewing. MINT supports the continuing learning and skilfulness of its members through meetings, open sharing of resources, communication, publications, and shared practice opportunities.
Rather than seeking to limit or control the practice and training of motivational interviewing, MINT promotes quality applications of motivational interviewing across cultures, languages, and contexts.
MINT is built upon four foundational values:
To encourage good practice standards, MINT membership is limited to trainers who have completed a training workshop for new MI trainers that is either sponsored or endorsed by MINT. This Training of New Trainers (TNT) workshop is designed to teach well-established methods for training practitioners in MI.
The application to attend a MINT-sponsored or MINT-endorsed TNT is a formal process and requires demonstration of your current ability to practice motivational interviewing. TNT workshops are conducted around the world, and may also be conducted in languages other than English.
Detailed information regarding how to become a member of MINT can be found on the MINT webpage, Training New Trainers.
